Mie Hama was born in Tokyo, Japan, on 20 November 1943 and her
Cantonese name, 'Mie', means 'beautiful'. Her first job was as a
bus fare collector where she was spotted by producer 'Tomoyuki
Tanaka' (qv). Her debut in sci-fi came when she starred as "Fumiko
Sakaurai" in _Kingukongu tai Gojira (1962)_ (qv). She was the first
woman to be pursued by Godzilla and to be held in the paw by
Japan's version of King Kong. Today she is an active
environmentalist.
