Monica Seles was born in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia.
She is a tennis player who was ranked number one in the world at the end of 1991, 1992 and 1995. She won 9 grand slam titles and 44 other tournaments. She didn't officially retire although she has not played since 2003, in May, when she lost in the first round of Roland Garros.
On April 30, 1993, during a changeover, she was stabbed in the back (just below left shoulder blade) by 38-year-old German Guenter Parche, a fanatical fan of Graf's who wanted to see Graf return to No. 1; Seles did not play again for over two years.
